Month: November 2007

  • Critical Mass Harbour Bridge ride!

I’ve been out a lot this month (what a surprise… I used to be the one who never goes anywhere xD), but this has to be the biggest event in November. It’s Critical Mass’s annual ride across the Sydney Harbour Bridge… on the road! Now, I cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge regularly, but of course I normally ride on the cycleway on the side. How exciting to ride on the main road instead!

I’m so glad that there wasn’t any rain during the trip. It actually
rained a little when I headed out to the city earlier today, but the
weather was fine by the time I got to Hyde Park. I actually arrived
early, and a random person (without a bike) asked me where I came
    from. Is that a
standard greeting here? I mean, I would consider that an odd thing to suddenly say to a stranger.

Anyway, the person went away and soon I saw other cyclists.

The trip started with everyone gathering around the Archibald Fountain. It’s great to see so many people with their bikes!

    What a crowd!

Someone has a really impressive bike there. Look at the bubbles coming from the back! (That’s an interesting use for a bubble blower…) I wonder how many photos he posed for today.

    Ooh, impressive bike!

At events like this, it always seems as if everyone else knows someone there and I’m the only one who doesn’t know anyone else. Well, it’s a good chance to make new friends. Yay for braided hair!

Yay for braided hair! Uhh, what's her name... Vanessa? I'm sure it starts with a V...

That’s nice, a pink skirt with a pink bike to match!

    Nice pink skirt!

Now, off we go through the city… We started by circling around the fountain a few times before leaving Hyde Park. I thought we were just going to head straight for the bridge, but soon it was pretty obvious that we were going south. Many others asked why we were going that way, and someone said “because it’s fun”. Well, I agree! How often do we get to ride through the city in a whole crowd? We didn’t even have to stop at red lights! We didn’t have to be afraid of the car drivers who told us to get off the road! In fact, many of the participants told the car drivers to get off the road. xD I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve had enough of car drivers telling me to get off the road! (I especially hate the ones who do so while on the other side of the road.) What a perfect opportunity to get even… xD

    Going through the city...

The main aim of this trip was to ride across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and after a tour around the city, here we are, heading towards the bridge.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, here we come!

Here’s a view of the bridge itself from the bridge. I couldn’t see them at the time, but there were some bridge climbers up there. I joined in when everyone else waved at them anyway. Well, aren’t they lucky, a once-a-year special view! xD

    Hello, bridge climbers!

Well, I’m pretty sure this is meant to make people look (maybe to taunt the car drivers?), but whatever the reason is, it’s interesting to see everyone lifting up their bikes. YAY for our bikes! :D

    Yay for our bikes!

After stopping on the bridge to randomly lift up our bikes and wave at people, we continued to the other side of the bridge, and there we were at North Sydney, going up Pacific Highway. What a familiar place! The slope that I normally struggle to climb was much easier today. We then turned towards our destination at Miller Street. Someone decided to stop to taunt the car drivers. xD It must be a bad day for those who were driving through the city or North Sydney today!

Look at him lift up his bike in front of those stopped cars!

We have finally reached our destination at Civic Park, North Sydney. What a nice trip!

    Yay, we made it!

  • ChocSoc’s first official event!

So, it’s finally the big day! ChocSoc’s first event… Yay!

My phone rang when I was on my way there… when I was stopped at a red
light on a slope. I guess it could be more awkward if it wasn’t a red
light. It was actually quite easy to find the San Churro even though I’ve never been into that street before, and it was convenient that there was a sign to which I could chain my bike right outside. (There was a tree too, but it seems kind of awkward to chain my bike to a tree.)

At the beginning, everyone just stood around at the doorway. It was actually kind of funny…

    Yay huggles!

Later on, more people arrived, and everyone started looking at all the chocolates they have on offer…

    Ooh, look at the chocolate!

It was actually a while before we started ordering, but look what they have at San Churro… The classic chocolate shake is really thick (it’s not really like a “milkshake” nor an “iced chocolate” from other cafés… I wonder what this would be called in other places?), and it’s the kind that made you more thirsty when you drink it. Just that alone would actually be enough, but I ordered a Tapas as well. The fried chocolate is really good. The brownie is good too but it’s not really that special.

    Doesn't this look yummy?

I actually went walking around with my friends after eating all that chocolate. (Wouldn’t want to ride all the way home when I’m all bloated.) Yay for randomly taking videos of ourselves! xD

After all that, I went all the way home on my bike. I’m so out of shape. I used to be able to ride all the way home without pulling over onto the pavement, but now I actually ride on the pavement when going uphill (after crossing the bridge, not in the city). I don’t know if it’s because I need more practising or if I need more rest. (Then again… at least I can still ride all the way home.)

  • L’été est la, c’est vraiment fantastique…

Yay! C’est les vacances! (Yes, I still like that song. So catchy… xD)

After finishing the exams yesterday, I actually stayed around on campus with my friend for a while before riding my bike home and then going out again by train. It was a good idea that I didn’t have the bike with me in the city because I ended up staying out until 10 or so.

Waiting for my friends in the city can actually be quite awkward. A random person came up and asked “Where are you from?”. O.o

My legs are still sore from riding my bike all the way home yesterday (after not cycling much during the exam period). I need to get back in shape. Going to the gym just isn’t enough…

Still, I’m so glad that exams are over! That’s it for the year… :D

  • Being under “high security” is awkward…

First day of exams and I have a clash…

I got seat number 1 for today’s exams. It’s the table right in front of the door. For normal classes I actually like sitting right in front of the door, but sitting there for an exam is awkward. The invigilators walk in and out, and their phones keep ringing too. Being the “clash room”, everyone in there is doing a different combination of exams, and other staff members have to keep calling the invigilators to inform them of the different arrangements needed for different people.

Staying in the room for lunch was the worst part. I don’t like being stuck in a room with so many people. It’s just weird being cramped up in a room like that. One of the invigilators actually announced that we were “under high security”. (Apparently, if anyone walked out and was seen, that “wipes out” the exam paper.) That was an awkward statement. Having to be “escorted” to the toilet was awkward too. It was actually kind of funny how the invigilators asked the whole room if anyone needs to go whenever someone goes (so they don’t have to make so many rounds) though. xD

The exams themselves weren’t too bad. LNGS1002 wasn’t something I’d worried about at all anyway, and at least the ELEC1103 exam wasn’t “multiple guess” for me. xD

Three more to go! Stats on Wednesday… I hate stats.
